URBAN DESIGN – GÓRKA NARODOWA, CRACOW

The project, which was made as a part of the course ‘Architectural and urban designing’, involved the areas in the northern part of Cracow at 29 listopada Ave. close to Górka Narodowa housing estate. Our task was to create a new ‘city tissue’, mainly multi-family houses that would be integrated with existing buildings and to define how to connect it with the city. The development of the application program  was preceded by analysis of the needs of residents in different age groups during which the functional and spatial structures were designed. The whole was created towards sustainable design, including modern technological solutions. The project was implemented in a three-person team.

LoCATION

The developed area is located in the northern part of Cracow within the Górka Narodowa housing estate – the 4th district of  Prądnik Biały. The area is bordered to the east by the 29 listopada Ave.(national road No.7) and to the south by Stefan Banach St. The nearest neighborhood is single-family housing, medium-high multi-family buildings and economic and storage facilities.  For the existing area the Municipal Spatial Development Plan is prepared. It provides for the creation of not only a tram line and its accompanying road but ‘Park and Ride’ car park as well. Moreovere, it is planned to create new space intended for residental development and a small market square as a public space. Not far from the north, Witkowice Park is located.

FUNCTIONAL OUTLINE

The designed development adapts to the existing one. The Center is a response to problems such as lack of order, domination of commercial and industrial services or lack of catering facilities. Two dominant building bordering on 29 listopada Ave. were introduced. Their main purpose is to provide a whole range of services- from office services, through recreation to health. They surround the strict center, which is an amphitheater. Around it there are terraces with restaurants that are hidden in the area. Above them, a small cinema and a hotel was located. Moving towards the west, we can observe gradually change of both the function and the form of buildings. From service buildings they become residental-service and then habitable (in the form of multi-family housing), ending with educational buildings serving the housing estate.  Additional elements that diversify the space are multi-functional pavilions scattered between residential buildings and those included in the Planty along the tram lines.

COMMUNICATION STRUCTURE

The existing communication routes used in the project are, 29 listopada Ave. and a fragment of Stefan Banach St. which has been slightly transformed and extended. One of the main assumptions was the withdrawal of road communication from the interior of housing estates. The following were designed: an access road to ‘Park and Ride’ park car, a road to the bus depot or a tram line terminating in a transportation hub, and finally cycle and pedestrian paths leading to different levels of public space. On the developed space there are above-ground parking spaces, however most parking lots are underground and are common to several facilities- mostly two in the immediate vicinity. The planned tram line is accompanied by a pedestrian path varied by greenery and a park layout in the form of Planty. Designed sidewalks have sufficient width to organize traffic for both pedestrians and cyclists. A comfortable bicycle path and  bicycle rental are located both at the ‘Park and Ride’ car park and near the school complex.

GREENERY SCHEME

The green infrastructure is integrated into the designed space in the form of several aspects.

GREENERY IN THE BUFFER ZONES  located near the noise sources, for example, tram line, streets with heavy traffic. Created to absorb the sound but as well to be a visual blockade that affects the sense of privacy and intimacy of the residents. In addition, it seperates residental housing from dangerous and uncomfortable areas such as the Care and Educational Center.

PUBLIC GREENERY  organizes the common space and provides comfort and privacy. Moreover, it creates a pleasant aura that surrounds buildings and positively influences the reception of space.

SEMI-PRIVATE GREENERY located within the residental housing. On the  plan, these are usually two intersecting rectangles – dividing the property into upper and lower floors. At their intersection a common space is created, in which we propose the function of vegetable gardens available for tenants of the whole building.

SEMI-PUBLIC GREENERY located on the terraces of service buildings, constituting a kind of garden, or a small section of the park dedicated for users.

GREENERY IN THE RECREATION AREA – these are pitches located near the educational buildings and path for dogs close to Planty.

WATER – currently, huge amounts of urban space suffer from too much undeveloped rainwater, which leads to sewer overflows and the loss of free resources enabling the reduction of clean water consumption, which is becoming more and more scarce on our planet. Such water can be used, for example, to flush toilets or after prior cleaning for watering green areas.  In our project to give it the most ecological character, which is necessary for the city as well as the creation of the most friendly public-residential space, we decided to use rainwater in various ways. The most important element are retention reservoirs located in the lower parts of the area which allow to get a rainwater from the surrounding surfaces and gather it at one point creating public squares. In the central public space we can observe the largest reduction of the area. In this place was located the water tank, which is also places in front of the field separating the stage from the audience. Moreover, rainwater was also used in recreation islands in the southern area. Retention reservoirs change the microclimate of th surrounding area and lower the temperature on hot days, making staying in such places much more pleasant.

OFFICE BUILDINGS AND HOTELS

At the eastern border of the plan two office and service facilities have been designed. The first two levels of these building are intented for shops, cosmetics, medical offcies, postal services, law firms or banks. The following floors are divided by a roof terrace and form two towers with open space. A crucial element connecting the objects is an open corridor from the west side equipped with staircases and lifts. This solution allows a quick transition from the bus station and the hotel through the whole of the developed area, overcoming a height of approx. 12 m. What is more, lifts make that the whole is adapted to the disabled people.

At the northern border of the area, close to the tram loop  and the bus depot there is a hotel. The proximity of the transportation hub and public spaces with restaurants determine the location of the building in this specific place. Due to its height and height of the area, from the windows and balconies of the hotel people can amire an amazing view over the city. This will certainly increase the prestige of the hotel and make that it will be a perfect place for visitors. In the underground part there is a car park and technical rooms

PUBLIC SPACE, RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT PART

The public space is the most important element within the boundaries of the plan. After the analyzes carried out in the immediate vicinity, there is a lack of space for meetings or generally speaking for  integration. Taking into consideration the terrein layout, we used the spirit levels to design restaurants that are driven into the area. This project includes three levels, namely premises lit from the south with gazebos/gardens, which during the winter thanks to  retractable glass partitions can be easily transformed into winter gardens. The adopted solution may have diverse functions- can be replaced by a pub, night club or gym. Everything depends on the interest of residents and other users. There is also a place for a playground for children.

Moving down there is an amphitheater with a stage covered with a movable membrane- screw coupling system. It is a space dedicated to the organization of concerts, outdoor cinema and other entertainment events. In the southernmost part there is a recreational island surrounded by water, which is a kind of oasis in the city, diversified with greenery of various kind. The island is not without a reason located in close proximity to service and office buildings which is a perfect spot for employees to enjoy the adventages of this place during their short breaks.

On the other side- at the highest point which is located northernmost in a small building which looks like pavilion, a small local cinema with two rooms was designed. In the public space you will also find public toilets or  an information and tourist point.  Greenery accompanies users in every part of this area- in the form of squares, flower-beds, small hills covered with grass or single trees.

HOUSING ESTATES

The housing estates consists of green ‘enclaves’. From the side of the public space, they are closed by the walls of buildings, which have a residential function from the inside, and a service function from the outside. To the west, the walls turn into dispersed forms, which despite their irregular arrangement retain a kind of rhythm that characterizes the designed housing estate. Entrances to buildings are usually located from the north-eastern side. Around there are rectangular gardens focused mainly on the south-western side. Inside the ‘enclaves’ are located a semi-private spaces which have no specific function so they can be used by residents in various way, for example, as a place of meeting or roofed place where they can rest during hot days. Conected they serve as small water reservoir which provide an optimal microclimate inside the housing estate. This solution serves as an alternative for residents that are not willing to use lively space located in the public area. In this way, areas of distinct character and privacy have been shaped, immersed in greenery, providing peace, comfort and security for residents.

SCHOOL COMPLEX

The educational zone is located in the center of the entire urban development in a residential area. Located in this place provides residents the best access from each zone.  It is also well connected, because of the lacation next to the newly created intersection of the road and tram line. From the southern side of the road seperates as a natural ‘greenbelt’ and then a car park that supplies the primary school and sports hall.  The first architectural elements that stands out, is primary school which is a three-floor building with an intergral atrium. From its eastern side there is a sports hall intended for use by both primary and high school students.  From the northern side of the school is a square where students can spend their breaks outside. Apart from this, the square is also a perfect spot for organizing school celebrations.

To the west of the square, a three-floor high school building was designed. The entrance is situated in its arcades, and its roll-call square which is also a fire-fighting yard. In the northern zone there is a kindergarten. Placing it in this specific area we wanted to locate it far from the road, which allows to keep children  away from the noise. The area belonging to the kindergarten was fenced with the greenery. We enter to the building from the inner courtyard in order to create the most private atmosphere. The square that belongs to the primary school is conected with two football fields and one basketball court. From the west side there is a space indended for Pétanque. The whole school area connects to the main avenue. Educational units are designed to provide education for young people from not only the proposed areas but the nearest housing estates as well.
