Project created as a part of the course ‘ Architectural and urban planning’ at the Institute of Urban Design in the fifth semester of engineering studies.

The plot is situated in the 13th district of Cracow- Podgórze. This place is located bewteen
Nadwiślańska St. and Piwna St.

The location has both  enormous potential and rich cultural and historical context. The history of this city dates back to around 10,000 years ago, when the first traces of human activity in this area has been affirmed. Probably since the 7th century Slavic settlement has been developing here. This district is very often called a place of contrasts and steel history. To the most known objects belong- the Schindler Factory Museum and the Bernatka Footbridge, which was built in 2010. In this area, there are also places associated with cruel history of the Holocaust, namely the above mentioned Schindler Factory Museum and Ghetto Heroes Square. Close to this area it is possible to cross the Vistula river thanks to the presence of two bridges. Józef Piłsudzki bridge  was built in 1933 and blown up by the retreating German troops in January 1945. Later it was rebuilt in 1948. After the reconstruction, the communication system was changed in order to allow the access to the bridge from Krakowska St. and Legionów St. Silesian Uprising Bridge was completed in 1978 to serve as a replacement for the Krakus Bridge which once stood in its place. Within 5 minutes on foot,  there are bus and tram termini. During the  last few years, Podgórze has become a place of modern and interesting investments.   Thnks to the unusual architecture like Bernatka Footbridge, or the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor improved the quality of local investment areas.

The functional stucture of the building objects is dominated by residental buildings that possess the service zone on the ground floors. In the neighbourhood there is a Music School. Without a doubt the value of this area is also increased by the proximity of cultural buildings, restaurants and shops.

My main goal was to create a residential facility that will enable the development of bonds between the local community. Nowadays, i because of the omnipresent smartphones and virtual realtions it’s hard to just talk with your neighbor.  It is important to create spaces like this in order to allow users to integrate with others.

The plot turned out to be quite a large area for the housing infill. The plots are often found to be narrow and tightly pressed between existing buildings.  An additional difficulty  was the characteristic loweringof the neighboring building’s and the terrace that is cut out inside. It was important not to block the access to the light for local residents.

Directions designated by the terrace determined the border of future objects. Due to the building on the other side of the plot and its completion from Piwna St. , one of the apartment has been withdrawn.

From the Nadwiślańska St. I decided to provide the residents with the most beautiful view on the Vistula. The viewing terrace divided the longitudinal solid into two differentiated cuboid.

Apartments, from the Nadwiślańska St. possess balconies that give the character of the front facade. Both facades were composed of two elements- a block finished with glass panels,  window glazing and an openwork form of finishing, namely wooden blind. The ground floor from  the Vistula side was cut almost all along its length and from Piwna St. in several places, for example,in the place of the  entrance gate to the underground garage.
